Some people love to camp out in tents. But outside at the South Pole? Not sure how many takers there would be for that. Last week, however, intrepid IceCube winterover Josh willingly spent the night in a tent pitched outside the South Pole station’s main entrance. Looks like he rested peacefully, as shown below. Above, that’s winterover Martin, in a selfie he did outside the tent in tribute to Roald Amundsen, who took similar photos in 1911, but in daytime, of course. Robert Falcon Scott’s expedition (which lost to Amundsen’s in the race to the South Pole) had also engaged a photographer. (Some odd years ago, a pair of artists took up residency in Antarctica to reenact some of those historic photos and film sequences.) Apart from all the tent excitement, the skies were dark from lack of moonlight but filled with light from the auroras.
