Life at the South Pole is full of traditions. And as one year ends and another begins, anticipation always mounts for a special tradition: the unveiling of the new South Pole marker. The precise location is adjusted every year because of movement of the polar ice sheet, so a new marker inaugurates this event. This year’s marker sports the names of the previous year’s winterovers engraved around the pole just beneath the decorative top. The ceremony brings everyone outside, standing in a spiral as they pass the marker from person to person before it is eventually planted in its new location.
