It was sunrise last week at the Pole. But first, let’s take a look at that moon. IceCube winterover Martin was outside with his camera, and the image above shows how beautiful the sky looked opposite from the sunrise. The moon was full and low in the sky, while the horizon was blurred with hazy bands of pinks and blues. That’s the IceCube Lab of course in the lower right. Below is an image of the sunrise, and lo and behold Martin captured a glimpse of the green flash, a phenomenon that can occur at sunrise or sunset when conditions are favorable. Photographers consider themselves lucky to capture this event, and Martin has been lucky before. As for Martin’s photo below, it was selected for a recent Astronomy Picture of the Day by NASA.
