Week 47 at the Pole

More planes (and more fresh faces) arrived at the Pole last week. With five planes total during the week, most of the winter crew has departed. Among the newcomers are both of IceCube’s winterovers for 2020–2021, Martin Wolf and Josh Veitch-Michaelis. You can learn more about them here. There is normally a scheduled overlap between the pairs of winterovers, so the outgoing team can let the new team settle in and show them the ropes a bit before they depart. But this year there was no “changing of the guard” photo that included all four winterovers. As always at the Pole, when it comes to flights and weather, flexibility is key. And after some flight delays this year, winterover Yuya ended up departing on the same flight that Martin had arrived on. Josh came in on a separate flight.

Current winterover John remains at the Pole for a little while to overlap with Josh and Martin. He was able to capture a few images of Yuya waiting for Martin’s flight to land (above, with his camera!) and then greeting him upon arrival (below). Josh and Martin wasted no time and got straight to work last week, shown taking inclinometer measurements in the bottom image.
