Week 14 at the Pole

With the darkness of winter settling in, it’s time to cover the windows. There are light-sensitive experiments operating at the South Pole during the winter, so the window coverings, besides adding to the décor, serve to limit light pollution from the station. It’s also time for winterizing outdoor equipment and vehicles. Although a large fleet of vehicles is needed for summer activity, most of them are left idle for the winter. They’ll get snowed in and then dug out come summer. The week went out with a bang—they had a celebratory party for “Yuri’s Night” (no photos this year, but you can check out a past year’s here).
