Week 40 at the Pole

Depending on which way you face, it can still seem a little dark at the Pole. In the image above, the sun is bright but it leaves the foreground dark and shadowy. Below, we still see surface shadows that show off all the intricate designs left in the snow from the winds, but the entire scene is bright with the sun to one’s back. There was plenty of detector maintenance to keep everyone busy last week, at the Pole and up north. Apart from the that, the station continues preparing for its summer opening. IceCube winterovers Camille and Alicia, along with a fellow winterover helper, put in a major effort to clear accumulated snow at the IceCube Lab. Also, the fuel barn was moved into place and its heating system connected so the tank can start to warm up before the first plane arrives. And remember those ripe greenhouse peppers? They got a huge harvest last week, and turned their batch into three different types of hot sauce!
