Enjoy it while it lasts! Although sunrise at the South Pole stretches out over weeks, providing plenty of time to appreciate it, the weather isn’t necessarily cooperative each day. So when you get a clear sky that allows an unbroken band of striking color along the horizon, you take time to pause. And then, hopefully, have time to snap a nice photo while you’re at it. Last week, IceCube’s winterovers were busy with other things besides reveling in the imminent sunrise. With the increasing outdoor light from summer’s approach, it was time to cover up the IceAct telescopes. They were happy to have a relatively bright and windless day for that chore. Indoors, they had other detector tasks, including measurements from some new electronics. It’s also that time for deep cleaning as the whole station works to get things ready for summer personnel.
