Week 9 at the Pole

Ah, the waning days of summer, when the shadows cast by the lowering sun lengthen with each passing day. Here we see the photographer’s shadow as they capture a view of the station from the berms. Last week at the Pole was relatively quiet for IceCube’s winterovers. Both Ilya and Joe are on the emergency fire team, and they suited up in full gear last week for training. They also gave a webcast for a group of middle schoolers who have an annual “world tour” in which they schedule a 24-hour marathon of calls to speak with people on every continent. The winterovers shared a photo of themselves at the ceremonial South Pole, complete with a greeting sign and stuffed penguin, as part of this event.
