Week 18 at the Pole

Bright green auroras filling the skies.

The auroras keep coming. Last week at the Pole, IceCube winterover Ilya captured this image of the sky full of bright green auroras. IceCube winterover Joe was also taking aurora photos, but with his phone, as in the image below. The phone camera photo is supposedly closer to the impression given when seen with the naked eye. The winterovers have also been regularly visiting and documenting conditions at the IceCube Upgrade drill camp, where the some of the snowdrifts are as tall, or taller, than the shipping containers. Last week’s fire training involved searching for and rescuing a stranded victim, all while outfitted in full gear and blindfolded (to make things really challenging!).

The sky lit up with green auroras, appearing less bright with smartphone camera image.
