Week 10 at the Pole

A nice halo surrounds the lowering sun at the Pole, with some mistiness along the horizon. Sun halos, also called 22-degree halos, can appear in clear skies, too, as it’s the crystals in the high cirrus clouds that refract the light in this way. IceCube winterover Ilya captured another nice outdoor photo below, showing the IceCube Lab (ICL) with the Upgrade buildings off to the right and the South Pole Telescope in the distance on the left. The winterovers were busy with continued computer upgrades at the ICL, reflagging part of the flag line from the station to the ICL, doing an outreach webcast with a group in the UK, and joining in with the station-wide winter food pull, where around 15,000 pounds of boxed food was moved up and stored on various station decks.
