Week 38 at the Pole

The equinox occurred last week, and the sun has finally risen above the horizon. The sky in turn is showing off an array of beautiful colors, providing a nice backdrop for outdoor photos. At the Pole, sunrise is traditionally celebrated with a special dinner. This year’s meal had seven courses and included a frosted gingerbread dessert, shaped and decorated in the form of the South Pole station. (Nice handiwork!—that’s IceCube winterover Johannes putting on finishing touches, below.) The celebration also provided a moment for station members to get a glimpse of next year’s pole marker—the reason they’re applauding, at bottom—but the rest of us will just have to wait until the new year for the official unveiling.
