Although the sunrise is still not officially here, the South Pole is enjoying a period of twilight. The horizon is clearly visible in the direction of the sun and is showing some characteristic orange color. The photo above shows this nicely, with the added effect that reflection in the station windows gives the appearance of a clear view through the windows of the continuous horizon. The greenhouse is in full swing, with watermelons relaxing in hammocks among lots of other growing vegetables. Plastic bags taped to the walls provide a sprouting environment for some snap peas (this you can do anywhere!). Last week had some social events, too—a Labor Day celebration and a brief ceremony for the station’s NOAA officer’s promotion to rank of lieutenant.
