Week 37 at the Pole
Sunrise is a prolonged event at the South Pole. But even though it hasn’t “officially” arrived yet (it will be soon), they held their celebratory sunrise meal last week. The station galley staff put out an array of heavy hors d’oeuvres followed by a ribeye steak dinner (no photos, but we can use our imagination). They probably needed the extra fuel, since in addition to their regular rotation of cleaning chores, everyone has additional deep-cleaning tasks assigned in the weeks leading up to summer station opening. Last week IceCube’s winterovers were again covering up an IceAct telescope, this one out in the field instead of on the roof of the IceCube Lab.
